‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Light-based treatment is clearly enjoying a wave of attention. There are now available glowing gadgets targeting issues like skin conditions and wrinkles along with muscle pain and periodontal issues, the newest innovation is an oral care tool enhanced with tiny red LEDs, marketed by the company as “a significant discovery in personal mouth health.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. Based on supporter testimonials, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

Research and Reservations

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Of course, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Daylight-simulating devices are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to boost low mood in winter. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Types of Light Therapy

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, finding the right frequency is key. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. Phototherapy, or light therapy employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It affects cellular immune responses, “and dampens down inflammation,” explains a dermatology expert. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “typically have shallower penetration.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – signifying focused frequency bands – that reduces potential hazards. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, though they might benefit some issues.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – an important goal for anti-aging. “Studies are available,” says Ho. “But it’s not conclusive.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Optimal treatment times are unknown, how close the lights should be to the skin, the risk-benefit ratio. Numerous concerns persist.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, explains the specialist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. If it’s not medically certified, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

Simultaneously, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, researchers have been testing neural cells, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he reports. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that claims seem exaggerated. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, but over 20 years ago, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he recalls. “I was quite suspicious. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, which most thought had no biological effect.”

What it did have going for it, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, allowing substantial bodily penetration.

Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, inflammation reduction, and pro-autophagy – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.

Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations

Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he says, approximately 400 participants enrolled in multiple trials, comprising his early research projects
