Youth Discovered Deceased Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was discovered deceased just days after being wrongly accused of taking the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his room at his Flintshire residence on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed stolen remains generated social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being harassed online after the allegations.
The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from educational personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that the student had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they did not got that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the authorities and after his questioning he was released while investigations continued."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
